My paintings are collected and exhibited widely, with over 700 held in private collections throughout Europe. North America and Australia. They form part of the permanent collection of the House of Lords (see Art UK) and other bodies.
The subjects that most delight me are wildlife and domestic animals. I love capturing the essence of living things, vibrant with energy. Through the handling of pigment, the energy of the brushstrokes and mark-making, I seek to convey the spirit of the living creature. These works tie in with my interests in environmental matters. They treat other creatures as having a status worthy of our interest and concern. I also paint flowers, still lives, landscapes and people. I am known for my watercolours but also enjoy working in other media.
Scottish by birth, I grew up in Yorkshire, and returned to live and work in Scotland. I now live and work in Somerset.
I was an academic, concentrating on environmental philosophy in the latter part of my career. My books have been published in the UK, the United States and China, and include an award-winning monograph.
I graduated from Oxford University with an MA (Hons) in PPE, and a B.Phil and D.Phil in Philosophy.
My artworks have been exhibited frequently – as an invited artist, by selection, in solo, two and three-person, group and mixed exhibitions. These include:
The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour; Aberfeldy Gallery; Gallery Heinzel, Aberdeen; Q Gallery, Dundee; Edinburgh Festival Fringe at BMC HQ; Kirkcaldy Art Gallery (Commendation); Jerdan Gallery, Crail; Eduardo Alessandro Studio, Dundee; Broughton Gallery; Braemar Gallery; Frames Gallery, Perth; Artay, Perth Festival of the Arts; Strathearn Gallery, Crieff; Dundee Art Society (for which I acted as President); Hexagon Group, Dundee; Pitlochry Festival Theatre; The Byre Theatre, St Andrews; Horizon Gallery, Alnwick; Coleg Harlech, Wales, Black Swan Arts, Frome.
