Lynn Baxter

Visual artist
As an abstract painter and sculptor with a wide practice and interest, I work in a number of media, including wood and metal. A fascination with the architecture of the picture plane and its surfaces seems to act as a bridge between my two and three-dimensional work. I love the industrial and architectural, the abstraction of letter forms, found materials, the old crafts, the written word.
My earlier career includes publishing, theatre, arts- and public art- administration, serving with charitable and public bodies. I now live and work in Somerset.
I hold a first class MA (Hons) in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, the University of Dundee and an MA in English Literature and Language from the University of Edinburgh. I also studied at Ruskin College, Oxford, the University of Warwick and Dundee College.
Awards: The Alastair Smart Memorial Sculpture Prize; The Pat Holmes Prize
Commissions: Bas Relief, A Cabinet of Curiosities for Eight Incorporated Trades, celebrating the medieval guilds of Perth, Scotland, for Volvo.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park International Student Residency, YSP and York St John University; Artist in Residence, Cromarty, awarded by the Cromarty Arts Trust
I have shown as an invited artist, and had solo and two-person shows, group and mixed ones, in commercial galleries and pubic museums as well as with local artists. Here are some of the places I have shown:
Scottish Society of Artists; Aberfeldy Gallery; Broughton Gallery; Edinburgh Festival Fringe as BMA HQ; Edinburgh Printmakers’ Workshop; Eduardo Alessandro Gallery, Dundee; Frames Gallery, Perth; Generator, Dundee; Highland Council’s touring exhibition to Inverness, Thurso and Wick Museums and Art Galleries; Perth Festival of the Arts; Braemar Gallery; the Byre Theatre, St Andrews; Pitlochry Festival Theatre; Strathearn Gallery; Crieff; The Travelling Gallery; the University of Dundee.
